Random creature design; the idea was that these blind beings float on the wind and absorb airborne nutrients through the gill-tendrils on the underside of their heads. I like its little rodent paws. Purple and red brush pen with colored pencil.

More old art. I love working with markers. Brush pen and marker is seriously one of my favorite media combinations.
This creature design stemmed from a frankly bizarre story idea I concocted in high school, about a motley group of humans and aliens living on a derelict deep-space station. The main character was a preteen boy whose ancestor on the station had stumbled upon a sinister entity from another dimension who had emerged in the depths of the station, but no one believed him and his family became regarded as a joke through the generations. There was also a mysterious and brooding young man who was secretly the lost prince of a planet that had experienced a civil war some years past, and a moody teenage girl with an alien stepdad whose biomech she regularly "borrowed" for space escapades.
(It's okay, you can laugh.)
The biomechs in the story were very odd creatures that were organically grown in laboratories and had armor plating and control systems implanted into their bodies. They were sapient and capable of communicating with their pilots.
I never really went anywhere with the story; I think I was trying to be cool and come up with some conceptually super deep sci-fi, but, well, I was 14.
(I executed this piece much later. My art definitely did not look like that in high school.)

Concept sketch for Smaragdus, the crystal Erdunn from the novel I've been working on (not the one that just came out). Smaragdus is a small entity who Tam, one of the heroines, finds imprisoned in the ruins of a city and inadvertently frees. Smaragdus asks her to find and free the other Erdunn, elemental creatures who were sealed away eons ago, and together they set out on an epic journey to gather the Erdunn and rescue Tam's sister Carrie from the questionably evil Lord Saturos.
Along the way, Tam discovers that she and Smaragdus can link energies, giving Tam access to Smaragdus's ability to crystallize and control the rock around her, which proves immensely helpful in their adventure. However, Smaragdus remains suspiciously vague about her origins and true motives, and Tam might have bitten off more than she can chew in her quest to show Saturos what she's made of.

More doodling! This is a concept sketch for Saturos, one of the main characters of a novel I'm working on. He's basically a goat-demigod, and while he likes to make an intimidating first impression and generally thinks lowly of humans for being so xenophobic, he is really a benevolent ruler and caring person.
When Saturos kidnaps entitled teenager Tam's sickly older sister, Tam follows him into another world populated entirely by inhuman creatures. On her quest to reach Castle Ravenscrag, Tam discovers that she has the ability to undo the seals binding powerful elementals who join her in her journey, and learns a few life lessons along the way. But these seemingly friendly elementals may not be telling her the whole story behind why Saturos sealed them away in the first place. Can Tam figure out who to trust before it's too late for both worlds?
Meanwhile, Tam's overstressed college student sister Carrie finds herself a "guest" in the foreboding Castle Ravenscrag. Not content to simply be a damsel in distress while her sister gets to go on a character-building epic quest, Carrie discovers that she possesses mysterious powers, and those powers are the reason Saturos brought her to his world. She also finds that he isn't nearly as villainous as he originally seemed, and he needs her help restoring the balance of his world before everything falls to ruin and chaos. Carrie's life at Castle Ravenscrag is much more fulfilling than back on Earth, and she will ultimately have to choose between meeting her parents' and society's expectations, or being happy.
It's been a fun story to work on. I enjoyed twisting some overdone stock character roles, and incorporating important messages about gratitude, selflessness, priorities, and following your heart instead of automatically letting everyone else dictate how your life should go.

Concept sketch for General Ironclad's sister and her foals from one of my My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fanfics that I will put on the blog eventually. I just really wanted Nebula to have like 80's rocker hair.

I've finished the cover for Blue Diver, and it was a lot of fun! Plenty of interesting stuff on this cover to tease the book! What's that thing on the right? A giant orange? Who are these motley creatures (including a Canadian)? Also, GIANT ROBOTS.
I'm also very pleased with this cover because I did some fiddling around with Corel Painter, and while it doesn't have the most sophisticated text generation options, I did discover some tools that allowed me to get some much better text effects than I've been able to with previous covers. And yeah, if you think the font looks familiar, you're not wrong. :) I liked that graphic so much that I decided to use it for the actual cover (in English, of course)!
Look forward to Blue Diver coming to the Kindle Store very soon!

Mallow liked to take naps in the fireplace. I don't know why. He was an odd little fellow. He'd always come out covered in soot. His big brother Chewie thought he could get away with sneaking into the fireplace because his black fur would disguise it, but we could always tell when we petted him.
